Drainage Dilemma
The Culvert at Deep Creek in Middletown, Delaware, posed a distinct challenge for the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT). This aging culvert demanded immediate attention to rectify drainage issues that were leading to damage and degradation of the culvert. In response, the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) pursued restoring the drainage functionality to the bridge culvert, using the innovative JET Filter System.
Solution
In order to effectively address the drainage challenges at hand, the proposed solution included the drilling of 16 new weep holes, each 26 inches deep, and the insertion of 16 units of the JET Filter 4” diameter open-end drainage system. This distinctive filtration system, designed for optimal performance in restoring bridge culvert drainage, was chosen for its ease-of-installation, durability, conical shape providing 200% more surface area compared to traditional weep holes, and its ability to prevent soil loss behind the culvert wall.
Paired with Mirafi® Filter-weave FW 300 to prevent clogging and soil loss, each JET Filter not only ensured efficient filtration but also facilitated optimal drainage. One of the units achieved an impressive drainage rate of 2.5 gallons per minute (GPM), highlighting our unwavering commitment to utilizing top-tier materials that meet the rigorous standards of a culvert restoration initiative.
The implementation of Deep Creek’s culvert restoration initiative, led by Mumford and Miller Concrete Inc., demonstrated precision and strict compliance with industry best practices. The methodical drilling of new weep holes and the systematic installation of JET Filter units were executed with attention to detail, guaranteeing optimal placement to achieve both efficient drainage and enduring structural integrity.
