18-Inch Square Tubing Supports Spud Barge Construction
January 6, 2026
Steel Supply recently sourced some 18″ square tubing with a 3/4″ wall, and naturally had to ask what it was being used for. As it turns out, the material was for a spud barge, illustrated above.
A spud barge is a floating work platform that uses one or more spuds, long steel columns that pass through guides in the deck and penetrate the riverbed or seabed, to hold the barge securely in place without traditional anchors or mooring lines.
For this project, the spuds were 75-foot lengths of 18″ square tubing, shown above with a banana for scale. The material was supplied as two 48-foot sections and one 55-foot section, with a total shipment weight of 25,831 pounds.
Whether the need is for giant square tubing or more common steel products, Steel Supply is ready to help and look forward to serving future projects.
