JesusGomezBOSTON, Mass.—October 15, 2014— GEI Consultants, Inc., one of the nation’s leading geotechnical, environmental, water resources, and ecological science and engineering firms, is pleased to announce that Dr. Jesús E. Gómez, P.E., D.GE., has joined the firm as a vice president to help lead the firm’s geostructural and geotechnical practice and expand their services in the Philadelphia region. Dr. Gómez brings 30 years of design and construction experience in geotechnical projects in the United States, South America, and the Caribbean.

Dr. Gómez has been the lead designer for numerous design and research projects of importance that incorporate technological advancements such as Micropiles, Soil Nailing, Single Bore Multiple Anchors (SBMA), Compressive Anchors, and Removable Anchors. He has extensive experience in design of deep foundations and excavation support, and has completed ground‐breaking work on numerical modeling of soil structure systems.

Prior to joining GEI, Dr. Gómez was a principal at Schnabel Engineering, Inc., and a Chief Engineer for the Venezuelan Branch of Franki Foundations. At Schnabel, Dr. Gómez acted as the Lead Designer responsible for the remediation of the movements of the Seawall and North Plaza of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., and for the remediation of the seawalls around Ellis Island in the New York harbor. He directed the design of 30‐ to 55‐ft deep excavations for construction of the award‐winning Automated People Mover Transfer Stations at the Tier 1 project at Dulles International Airport, with a total area of soil nailed excavation support of approximately 200,000 sf. Additionally, he was the Lead Senior Engineer for the design of over 1,200 micropiles, plus more than 50,000 sf of temporary and permanent soil nail walls at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. He conceived and developed a micropile foundation system for a 2,800‐foot long viaduct located in a highly seismic zone near Caracas, Venezuela, which is a landmark in the development of micropile technology in South America.

Dr. Gómez was one of the authors of the FHWA/ADSC Hollow Bar Soil Nail (HBSN) Test Program field research effort and report. He has also co‐authored research efforts on various topics such as Buckling of Micropiles, Micropile‐Footing Connections, Compressive Anchor Technology, and Soil‐Structure Interface Behavior, among others. Dr. Gómez has authored or co‐authored over 50 publications on practical technological applications and design in geotechnical engineering.

“The expertise, talent, and strategic understanding of new geotechnical technologies and trends Jesús brings to our firm is a real strength as we advance our presence and expand our services in the Philadelphia market,” remarks Patrick P. King, P.E., LSP, a GEI vice president and east operations manager. “He will be a true asset to our existing and future clients.”

Dr. Gómez holds both a doctorate and master’s degree in civil engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (Caracas, Venezuela). He was recipient of the 2004 Shamsher Prakash Award for Excellence in the Practice of Geotechnical Engineering, and in 2010 he was inducted into the Academy of Geo‐Professionals. In April 2011, he was honored by CE News Magazine as one of seven individuals on the “Power List of people advancing the Civil Engineering profession.” In 2014, he received the President’s Award by the International Association of Foundation Drilling for his contributions to the Geo‐Industry.
