T76 Hollow Bar Used at Pala Casino Parking Garage Expansion

San Diego, California

History

The Pala Casino Resort and Spa, located in the San Diego area was the first of a kind, Las Vegas-style luxury hotel to open in Southern California. Opening its doors in 2001, the Pala Casino Resort and Spa has gone through two expansions and is embarking on its third and largest to date.

Every area of the resort will be updated and the $170-million dollar expansion and renovation project will include an increase of the casino floor, a multi-pool entertainment complex, construction of a new 349-room tower hotel, an expansion of the spa, and three new levels of parking, which will add an additional 400 spaces to the current garage space.

Problem

Expanding an existing parking garage is always challenging. The low-overhead conditions make it very difficult to bring in the necessary equipment and such was the case at the Pala Casino project site.

The schedule for this project was very aggressive and that combined with the caving soil conditions and the low-overhead conditions inside the original parking structure make this a great job for hollow bar.

Solution

Hayward Baker, Inc. was awarded the contract for this parking garage expansion and worked closely with their project partner, Nucor Skyline. T76 hollow bar was used for this project for its ease of use in restrictive jobsites, such as low headroom conditions. By cutting the bar to a shorter length and adding couplings, Hayward Baker successfully utilized low clearance drill rigs for installation, instead of spending time and money on expensive custom tooling for their drills.

The micropiles were drilled and installed around the current columns to increase the load capacity to 125k per micropile, and support the additional three levels of parking needed for the project.

“Nucor Skyline was instrumental in providing the large quantity of bars in a short time frame, allowing Hayward Baker to continue installation without any delays in fabrication or installation.”
