One of SFT’s Largest Fender Orders in Australia for Port of Dampier

The Port of Dampier in Western Australia has expanded its infrastructure with the new Dampier Bulk Handling Facility (DBHF) – Stage 1 of Pilbara Ports’ wider Dampier Cargo Wharf Projects. Designed to support bulk urea exports while providing additional capacity for general cargo and cruise vessels, the development includes a 200 m long land-backed wharf, a 280 m long, 13.2 m deep berth pocket and an 11 m deep vessel manoeuvring area to accommodate Supramax and Panamax bulk carriers.
For the new facility, ShibataFenderTeam was contracted by Clough Projects Australia Pty Ltd, responsible for design and construction on behalf of Pilbara Ports, with Jacobs acting as project consultant. We designed and supplied 18 Dual Cone Fender Systems, incorporating a total of 36 SPC 1600 Cone Fenders. Each dual system features a 4700×8500 mm closed-box steel panel fitted with 100 mm thick UHMW-PE facing pads. The scope of supply also included 21 T-head Bollards with rated mooring capacities of 100 and 150 tonnes. A 7.5 kW capstan manufactured by long time-partner Straatman was also supplied.
The exceptional dimensions of the Dual Cone Fender Systems required particular attention throughout the entire process, from structural design to installation. The fender systems were designed to meet the specific berthing requirements of the new facility, while production and delivery were carefully coordinated to meet the project’s schedule and logistical requirements.
A project of this scale requires the combined efforts of all parties involved. Close cooperation with the Clough site team was particularly important during installation, which progressed smoothly despite the logistical challenges posed by the dimensions of the equipment. All 18 Dual Cone Fender Systems, together with the bollards and capstan, have now been installed at the new berth.
SFT’s substantial scope of supply reflects the scale of the overall infrastructure development. The new wharf incorporates more than 8,000 tonnes of precast pile caps, beams, planks and fender blocks.
We appreciate the professional and collaborative approach of Clough, Jacobs and all the teams involved throughout the process. The successful delivery of this order at the Dampier Bulk Handling Facility adds another significant reference for our growing portfolio in Australia and reinforces the company’s project-specific approach.
