Estudillo Canal Flood Control Project Stabilizes Stormwater Infrastructure

In early 2023, severe storms caused over 300 feet of the west channel wall of the Estudillo Canal in San Leandro, California, to collapse, prompting the need for both emergency and permanent repairs. The concrete channel, originally constructed in the 1960s, required a full wall reconstruction to restore its structural integrity. To address the underlying drainage issues and prevent future failures, a retrofit solution was implemented to relieve hydrostatic pressure.

JET Filter System provided 32 units of the JF4SSCVLV, a 4-inch diameter closed-end maintainable weep hole filter with check valve. Each unit features ASTM 316/316L stainless steel housing and Mirafi® Filter-Weave FW 300 geotextile filter media. The weep hole system was embedded within the reconstructed concrete channel wall, where it functions to relieve hydrostatic pressure, filter sediment, and provide essential maintenance access. This design ensures the long-term stability of the flood control structure.

The project, located at 15024 Crosby Street, was executed as a concrete channel wall flood control initiative. Reinforced concrete was the primary structure type, with drainage components consisting of 32 JET Filter JF4SSCVLV weep hole assemblies. The work was carried out under the direction of the Alameda County Flood Control & Water Conservation District, with Diamond Plumbing, Inc. serving as the contractor. The project reached completion in December 2023.
